Background: Metabolic Syndrome and Obstructive Sleep Apnea both increases cardiovascular risk. The association between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Metabolic Syndrome is very consistent in different populations. However, no study was done among Filipinos. It is therefore the aim of this study to determine the association between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Metabolic Syndrome at Philippine Heart Center.

Method: This is a cross sectional Study. Patients 21 years old and above who underwent overnight polysomnography were included in the study. The diagnosis of Metabolic Syndrome was based on the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) Report. To determine the association of Metabolic Syndrome with OSA and its severity, ANOVA for continuous variable and Fischer Exact for categorical variable were used. A p-value of < 0.050 was considered significant.

Results: One hundred consecutive patients were included in the study. There is significantly higher number of cases of OSA among patients with Metabolic Syndrome (51.32% vs 20.83%, p=0.010), Hyperglycemia (32.81 vs 4.17, p=0.006), Hypertension (77.63 vs 37.50, p=0.001), and Obesity (83.42 vs 54.17, p<0.001) among the OSA patients compared to the non OSA patients except for Dyslipidemia (38.18 vs 20.83, p=0.143). The odds of OSA is 4 times higher among patients with Metabolic Syndrome as compared with patients without Metabolic Syndrome and the association is statistically significant (p=0.012). Metabolic Syndrome is also associated with severity of OSA.

Conclusion: Metabolic Syndrome is significantly associated with the presence and severity of OSA. Hypertension, hyperglycemia, and obesity but not dyslipidemia are also associated with OSA. Our findings highlight the importance of high index of suspicion for OSA among Filipino subjects with metabolic syndrome and vice versa.
