Traumatic rupture of intracardiac structures is an uncommon phenomenon after blunt chest trauma. In earlier times, cardiac rupture was the only sequelae of non-penetrating (closed or blunt) cardiac trauma to receive attention. Apparently, this catastrophic event was originally observe by Senac in 1778. Although rupture of the ventricular septum was described in 1847 by Hewett, not until 1959 did Campbell and colleagues at the University of Minnesota first successfully repaired a ventricular septal defect produced by non-penetrating trauma. Fulda and associates reported the blunt traumatic rupture of the heart and pericardium requiring emergency surgery occurred at a rate of 0.3% in more than 20,000 trauma victims, and carried a high mortality rate of 76%. Thus, prompt diagnosis and treatment are needed to rescue such victims with lethal occult organ injuries. We report a case of ventricular septal rupture after a blunt chest trauma during a motorcycle accident.
